Back pain

Back pain is the second most common reason that people in Germany visit the doctor. Around one in three people are affected, and 80 % have complained of back pain at least once in their lives. The lumbar spine is the part of the spine that is most often affected.

Irrespective of the duration of the pain, a distinction is made between three different stages: acute pain, which lasts for a maximum of 6 weeks; subacute pain, which lasts between 6 and 12 weeks; and chronic pain, which lasts for more than 3 months.

As most pain goes away on its own or after physiotherapy or a change in lifestyle, chronic pain requires particular attention.

We clear up what the causes are. There are many conditions that may be causing the pain, such as slipped discs or disc protrusions, spondylolistheses, arthrosis of the vertebrae and facet joints, but also broken vertebrae or tumours, narrowing of the spinal canal, or diseases of the internal organs, stress or psychological emergencies that may cause pain in the spine.

Treatment of chronic complaints should address the root cause. This targeted therapy is meant to prevent the formation of a pain memory – for example, we use physiotherapy, heat applications, physical therapy, painkillers (without cortisone – non-steroidal anti-rheumatics (NSARs)), cortisone or opioids, anti-convulsants (for cramps) and anti-depressants (for depression), in addition to interventions (injections, catheters, probes), and other operations (pain pumps, pain pacemakers).

Most patients come to us because they are experiencing unbearable pain. Together, we will find the right procedure to free you of your pain.
